In the past, navigating a computer was impossible for visually impaired individuals, let alone reading the content on the web. However, because of the emergence of new technologies such as screen readers, even reading content online is possible.
A screen reader is a software program designed for the visually impaired. This software converts text into speech and may also feature Braille output technology, letting users obtain information by touch to trigger text reading.
Screen reader’s are among the technologies that promote digital inclusion. Digital inclusion aims to provide people, able or disabled, equal access to a digital interface. Like screen readers, an accessibility widget helps people with disabilities easily navigate a website. It offers options for vision-impaired individuals, neurodivergent, and people with other kinds of disabilities to have a satisfying web experience.
A screen reader provides feedback by Braille or speech. Text-To-Speech (TTS) is the technology behind the screen reader’s ability to translate on-screen information into an audio form. The user can hear the feedback through speakers or earphones. Meanwhile, a refreshable Braille display is necessary, so screen reader’s relay information in Braille.
Some screen reader users are not completely blind. This fact is something that most are not aware of. Visually impaired individuals who have some remaining vision sometimes use a screen magnifier along with a screen reader. A screen magnifier is ideal for reading on large screens, while it’s best to use a screen reader when using smaller devices.
When using a screen reader for a desktop, keyboards are typically used for navigation. For example, some of these readers will read the next header with the click of the h-key. On the other hand, mobile users don’t usually use external keyboards. Instead, the text-to-speech technology is triggered through touch and swipe navigation.
Screen readers can relay even an image’s information through Braille or speech. For this reason, it’s important to write an informative alternative text to the images you upload on your website. These describe common graphics in the applications they work with and on the operating systems.
You can interact with texts on different types of documents with the help of these readers. Reading becomes easier with just a few taps of key commands. Voice command is also possible by saying ”say all,” so it will read you the entire document starting from the cursor’s location.
Technology still needs to go a long way with inclusion. Screen readers are among those technologies that aim to provide an equal online experience for all. This software is ever-evolving, and it has improved people’s lives. In the past, these readers were nowhere to be found. Thanks to its discovery, blind, deafblind, and people with other visual impairments can now understand the content on their computers.
In closing, screen readers are evidence that assistive technology will improve in the next few years. As of today, there are many screen readers you can choose from.
