The Role Of Circuit Breakers In Protecting Your Home

A properly-installed and future-proofed electrical system can provide decades of service, but accidental damage and incidental wear and tear are natural. Father Time and Mother Nature, as well as human clumsiness and mistakes, will take their tolls on the electrical system.

Luckily, there are safety features to prevent issues from immediately turning into disaster. The circuit breakers in the electrical panel, for instance, will cut off power to circuits with unusual or unsafe electrical activity.

In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Electric, we break down the role of circuit breakers in protecting your electrical system and home. If you’d rather consult or hire a certified electrician in Saginaw, then contact Mr. Electric to get in touch with our office team.

Circuit Breaker 101

A circuit breaker is a safety device found in your electrical panel. Think of them as smart gates controlling electricity flow throughout your home. Each breaker manages electricity traveling to specific circuits, or areas; one might control your lighting system and bedroom outlets, another handles your kitchen appliances, and another powers your living room lights.

When everything is working normally, electricity flows through the breaker and into that area. But if the breaker senses a problem (like too much electricity or a short circuit), then it quickly “trips,” or shuts off power to prevent damage.

When a breaker trips, it stops electricity from flowing to that circuit completely. The sudden power cutoff might seem annoying when you’re in the middle of something, but it’s actually the breaker doing exactly what it should.

How Breakers Know When to Trip

Circuit breakers contain mechanisms that constantly measure the amount of electrical current flowing through them. Each breaker is rated for a specific maximum current (typically 15 amps or 20 amps for most household circuits).

When electrical current exceeds the breaker’s rating, a small metal strip inside the breaker heats up and bends. This bending motion triggers a spring mechanism that snaps the breaker to the “off” position to cut off power almost immediately. The entire process happens in fractions of a second.

Breakers also detect short circuits which occur when electricity takes an unintended path (like when a positive wire accidentally touches a negative wire directly). Short circuits cause huge surges of electricity that can be extremely dangerous. Breakers sense these power surges and trip instantly.

What Happens When Breakers Fail

As great as they are, circuit breakers themselves can fail. While quality circuit breaker trips can last for decades, they are neither forever nor indestructible.

If your breakers trip frequently, then it may be more than just a temporary overload. It could mean your system is struggling to keep up with your electrical needs. Flickering lights, buzzing or crackling sounds from the panel, scorch marks on the panel, and/or breakers that won’t stay reset are also warning signs.

You might also notice that certain areas of your home lose power more often than others. This could point to a deeper issue with wiring or the breaker itself.

If you notice any of these telltale signs of trouble, then contact Mr. Electric to have a local electrician in Saginaw investigate sooner rather than later. We can inspect your panel, test your breakers, and recommend the right solution.

Have a Local Electrician Investigate Today

Forcing on a circuit breaker that is constantly tripping off is a bad, bad idea. Pushing electricity through a faulty or damaged electrical circuit can damaged appliances and electronics and/or cause an electrical fire.

Don’t put your property at risk. Call or message Mr. Electric to have a local electrician come out and investigate. The peace of mind alone is worth the call.
