The Different Types of Automotive Lighting

In driving school, individuals are taught how to be competent drivers. One of the things you will be taught is automotive lighting. You will not pass the driving test if you fail to master and identify a car’s automotive lighting system. Lighting significantly impacts you as the driver and other road users. That is why you are taught the different types of lighting and their primary functions.

A car has a variety of lighting systems, each with a different function that enables them to signal other road users. When a driver misuses them, there is a high probability of an accident. Below are the primary lamps in a car and how to use them.

Headlights

Headlights are significant, and they are generally used in the dark. These lights enable the driver to have a clear view of the road and signalling other motorists that there is a car on the road. Headlights are categorised into two, low beam and high beam. A low beam provides a balanced light distribution without blinding other motorists. On the other hand, high beams provide an intense light distribution without any glare control. Drivers are advised to use them when there are no visible cars, either coming or going.

Tail lights

Tail lights are located at the back of the vehicle, and they are produced in red colour. They will light every time the headlights are on. They are significant, especially for the motorist behind your car; they can recognise your presence and how far ahead you are.

Brake lights

They are found at the side of the car’s rear lights, whose main function is to alert other drivers that you are about to stop or slow down. They are the easiest to use, and you don’t need to turn anything on or off. Immediately you apply the brakes, and they will be activated.

Hazard lights

They are also known as flashers. They are found at the back and front of the vehicle. Whenever you encounter mechanical problems while on the road, you can use them to alert other motorists. Apart from when having problems, you can use them during slow funeral procession traffic.

Driving lamps

They are inside the car, and their primary function is brightening the interior. With these lights, a driver can check on maps or locate items in the dark. They are also crucial to the passengers on board, but one thing about them is that they should not be sued for a long time.

Signal lights

These lights are at the back and front of the car, beside the head and tail lights. Once activated, the other motorists will be able to know that you are about to take a particular turn or route on the road. Make sure you indicate the right direction so that you don’t confuse other road users.

Fog lights

These lights have a huge impact, especially when driving on foggy roads. They are there to give the driver visibility and make your vehicle visible on the road. In most vehicles, they are placed under the headlight assemblies.

Reversing lights

These lights are used whenever you initiate a reverse gear. They will show at the rear of the vehicle, they are usually white in colour. It is an effective alert to other motorists that you have engaged a reverse gear.

Final take away

Road safety is something that you need to adhere to, not only for your sake but for other road users. One of the best ways to do that is by using automotive lights as required. If you are a driver, you must familiarise yourself with these lights. Additionally, these lights provide comfort to those inside the car as they can locate things inside the vehicle during dark hours.
