More than 16 lakh candidates registered for NEET 2021, and over 95% of them appeared for the exam, conducted on September 12 this year. The NTA is likely to announce the NEET 2021 results anytime soon, following which the MCC counselling for UG admissions will occur. 

That said, candidates need to know about the top medical colleges in India based on the number of seats allotted and their NIRF rankings for 2021.

Based on NIRF rankings, the top 5 medical colleges in India aspiring doctors can apply to after successfully clearing the NEET 2021 exam are as follows – 

1. AIIMS New Delhi

AIIMS New Delhi Top Medical College

Considered to be India’s best colleges for MBBS aspirants, it has consistently been ranked number one in the NIRF rankings over the years. Spread across a 115-acre campus, it offers both UG and PG courses alongside PhD programmes for students. 

Candidates getting admission into AIIMS New Delhi post their NEET 2021 result can expect a combination of best-in-class faculty, research-based learning and patient care exposure over 5 years in the college. 

2. PGIMER, Chandigarh 

PGIMER, Chandigarh leading medical education institution

At second place is PGIMER in Chandigarh, a leading medical education institution in India offering over 50 UG, PG, super speciality and PhD courses. Compared to AIIMS New Delhi, the NEET 2021 results won’t matter much, considering that students need to appear for the INICET examination to be eligible for admission at PGIMER. 

With over 600 faculty members and modern amenities, the institution has strengthened its position as one of the top medical colleges in India.

3. Christian Medical College, Vellore

Christian Medical College, Vellore

The Christian Medical College in Vellore is ranked third on the NIRF rankings for 2021. A privately held university, the admission to both UG and PG programmes at CMC will be based on the candidate’s NEET exam results.  Students enrolled at CMC also get a chance to intern at the Christian Medical College and Hospital in different departments. 

They are usually offered a stipend of Rs. 18000 per month and can then work at different hospitals across the country after a year. They can also apply for scholarships to get quality education at subsidized fees. 

4. NIMHANS, Bangalore 

NIMHANS, Bangalore National Institute of Mental Health

Established in 1974, the National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences or NIMHANS in Bangalore is another top medical college in India offering multidisciplinary education in areas such as mental health and neurosciences. 

Admission to the college will be based on the candidate’s NEET 2021 results and a candidate must fulfil the programme-specific criteria to be eligible for admission.

5. SGPGIMS, Lucknow 

SGPGIMS, Lucknow best medical colleges in India

The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow occupies the fifth spot in the NIRF rankings for 2021. Offering tertiary medical care, super-speciality training and research across different departments, it is among the best medical colleges in India for aspiring doctors. 

SGPGIMS currently has 30 academic departments, a library with over 16,000 books and over 450 scientific journals for their students. Based on your NEET 2021 results, you can apply to their B.Sc./M.Sc., MD and Ph.D programmes among others.
