CPSC Warning About Choking And Injury Risks, Walmart Recalls Magnetic Balls

After the US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued many warnings for the toy kits, noting the potential of harm or even death, regulators issued a recall for high-powered magnetic balls.

Background

Magnetic balls have gained popularity among children as a toy item, but concerns have been raised about their safety. The CPSC has received reports of children choking on the magnetic balls, as well.

The “Relax 5mm Science Kit, Large Hematite Magnets Magnetic Stones Building Blocks,” which was only available on the Walmart website through Joybuy, was recalled.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated earlier in December that these magnets, which are frequently sold to youngsters, are both magnetically stronger than allowed and small enough to fit into the organization’s small parts cylinder, which mimics the breadth of a child’s throat. The strong magnets have the potential to attract one another and other metals within the digestive tract if ingested, which might result in “intestinal perforations, twisting and blockage, infection, blood poisoning, and death.”

From 2017 to 2021, the EPA anticipated that there would be 2,500 ER visits due to magnet ingestions and seven deaths, two of which occurred outside of the US.

There are 4,240 units impacted by the recall. Customers should remove the balls from children right once, according to the CPSC, and get in touch with Joybuy to request a pre-paid label so they can return the recalled goods for a complete refund. The toy kit, which cost between $14 and $15 and was constructed of tiny magnetic balls in the colors purple, black, green, blue, orange, and red, was available for purchase from February 2022 until April 2023.

Customer Assistance

Walmart is committed to assisting customers who have purchased magnetic balls. Customers who have purchased the affected magnetic balls can visit any Walmart store or contact Walmart’s customer service department to receive a full refund. Walmart representatives are available to assist you with any questions or concerns about the recall.

Bottom Line

Walmart’s recall of magnetic balls is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of children. The CPSC’s warning highlights the potential risks associated with these toys, and Walmart’s action in preventing further harm to its customers is greatly appreciated. By working together with the CPSC and taking immediate steps to remove the magnetic balls from store shelves, Walmart is demonstrating its commitment to child safety.
